FAQ
- Can I get a program guide?
- We do not publish a program guide because our weekly 8 hour show is downlinked by hundreds of channels across the country at different times, with different schedules, and we can never tell you when any particular clip will play in any particular area. Also, if people knew what was coming up they would only watch clips they like, and perhaps never try anything new. Surprise is an important part of our strategy of creating a new audience for the arts.
- Who funds CAS?
- CAS is completely funded by the Lloyd E. Rigler - Lawrence E. Deutsch Foundation, a major arts supporter for over 25 years, which has created CAS to inspire viewers to go out and see live performances in their own communities, and so help to build a future audience for the arts.
- How long is your show?
- We edit together a new 8 hour show every week (starting on Friday), featuring approximately 150 clips. This show is then sent out three times a day (that's 24 hours) via satellite G15-5 to all of North and South America including the Bahamas and Hawaii. Your local channel then downlinks it and airs it at whatever schedule they like.
- Where do you get your clips?
- Most of our clips come from the companies who have graciously given us permission to air the clips, at no cost, in an effort to aid us with our public service goal of creating a new audience for the arts, provided we show no advertising, do not sell the clips, or alter them in any way. Other sources include public and private archives, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the National Gallery of Art, and the Library of Congress. See a short list of a few of our major distributors here: Get Videos
- I'd like to request that you create a type of clip. Is that possible?
- We don't actually produce anything. Most of the clips you see come to us through the courtesy of the record companies and unions involved, at no cost, in an effort to aid us with our public service goal of creating a new audience for the arts.
- How Can I Get a Video?
- We regret that we're unable to respond to every request for information about the clips we show. We apologize if your e-mail regarding a favorite clip goes unanswered. We hope that the information we place on screen is enough for people to find the clips themselves. If you cannot locate a clip, even with a thorough on line search, it's most likely because the clip is not available to the public. CAS does not own the material we show, so we cannot sell videos ourselves. As a Private Foundation we are not permitted to involve ourselves in commercial transactions, so there's only so much we can do regarding viewers who wish to purchase tapes. Our mission is not to sell videos or CDs, but to inspire a new audience to support live events in their community. We will do everything we're capable of doing to help viewers locate clips, but, again, if you're written to us and not received a response, we apologize. Click the Get Videos page for a list of some video distributors we deal with most often.
- Can you make your screen credits bigger, or leave them on longer?
- We have played around with different sizes. Most people read the credits with no problem, and though we certainly recognize that many of our older viewers might have difficulty seeing them, we feel that they are as large as they can be, given the amount of information we must legally display. And the longer we leave them on, the less clips we can show. This is why we include the credits at the beginning and end of each clip.
- Can I get CAS on a small satellite system?
- CAS is available on DISH Network Satellite TV's channel number 9406. Many DISH viewers may need a second dish to get the public interest channels. We have applied to Direct TV.
- How can I get my station to air CAS more often?
- CAS is available 24 hours a day, but each station that downlinks us airs us for as long or as short as they want. If you'd like to see us on the air more often, or at different times, the best way to make that happen is for you and your friends to petition your local channel. They always listen to viewer comments and requests.

- Why are your clips sometimes interrupted by other programming?
- Interruptions come from your local station or cable provider. Different stations or cable providers downlink our 24 hour satellite signal at different times, and for different lengths of time. Some show us all day, some only one hour per week. We are mostly seen over their educational and public access channels, which are frequently unmanned. That means a computer is switching from one show to the next. Since we're on hundreds of channels, each with their own clocks, there is no way to time our show with their station announcements or programming switches, which usually occur at the top of the hour. We ask that they do not interrupt our clips for any reason, but there is invariably some "time overlap" between the ending of our clips and their computer switching. It simply cannot be avoided.
- Why don't you air longer pieces?
- Most of our clips come from the record companies who have graciously given us permission to air the clips, at no cost, in an effort to aid us with our public service goal of creating a new audience for the arts, provided we show no advertising, do not sell the clips, or alter them in any way. We are also limited in how long we may show each clip, usually no more than five minutes. So we are unable to present longer works like entire concerts or films. Also, our mission is to present a wide range of arts each hour, so the short clip format works best for our goals.
- Why is some information missing from your screen credits?
- Most of our clips come from the record companies. They send us the tapes, and all the credit information, and sometimes a date or a name is not included. We present all pertinent information that is available to us.
- Can I contribute to CAS?
- Though we very much appreciate the offer to contribute, we are completely funded by the Lloyd E. Rigler - Lawrence E. Deutsch Foundation, and do not solicit any outside funding.
- Can you add subtitles to the foreign language clips?
- CAS does not produce any of the clips you see. Any subtitles you see were placed there by the producers of the original tape. Most of our clips come from the record companies who have graciously given us permission to air the clips, at no cost, and with waivers from the unions, in an effort to aid us with our public service goal of creating a new audience for the arts, provided we show no advertising, do not sell the clips, or alter them in any way. Adding subtitles would be considered "altering" the clip, and this we cannot do. (And as a small, non-profit public service organization, we are not equipped to handle the massive amount of work required to research and translate lyrics, and then produce subtitles.)
- How often do you repeat a show?
- CAS is a weekly show. Each week we edit together a new 8-hour show, broken down into one hour blocks, featuring approximately 150 new classic art clips. That's more new weekly programming than any other show on television. We then send out our show via satellite G15-5 three times a day (that's 24 hours), free and unscrambled, to individuals, cable providers and broadcasters all over North and South America. Anyone with a large dish can pick us up. Each day we randomly shuffle the one-hour blocks. Different stations downlink us at different times. Some air us for only an hour, some all day. So depending on how often and when CAS is scheduled in your area you could very well see repeat clips within a single week. But don't worry, there's always a completely new eight-hour show every Friday night.
- Can I submit a clip for airing on CAS?
- We're always looking for new classic arts videos. If you feel you have something that fits our format please send us a tape. A VHS is fine for viewing, but if we choose to air it we will need a copy from the master on Betacam SP, or a DVD. Tapes and DVDs are not returned unless accompanied by a SASE. As a non-profit, non-commercial organization engaged in public service work, CAS does not pay for its clips. However, we always provide appropriate on screen credit. Mail tapes and DVDs to:

- Can you fix the reception?
- Our satellite signal is, for all intents and purposes, perfect, and we must rely upon the quality of the equipment that downlinks us and sends the show off to you. Some stations situated in valleys, or in lightning storm areas, have difficulty accessing our satellite signal. Usually when there's a reception problem, it is because many of the community stations that downlink us are unmanned, and there is often no one present when the computer switches from one show to another. Since different shows come to them from different sources (some are on tape, some, like ours, come via satellite) their channel often has different sound levels. The best thing to do is call your local station and let them know about your reception problems.
- Do you have a mailing list or newsletter?
- As a small non-profit organization engaged in public service, we are unable to publish anything as monumental as a newsletter, and so we do not maintain a mailing list, or publish any sort of newsletter.
-
How long have you been on the air?
- Since May of 1994, and we plan to continue for many more years to come.
